WHAT IS WIOA?
The Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA) is federal landmark legislation that is designed to strengthen and improve the nation’s public workforce system and help get Americans, including youth and those with significant barriers to employment, into high-quality jobs and careers, and help employers hire and retain skilled workers.
Funding under WIOA is the largest investment in federal workforce development, providing states and localities the flexibility that they need to upskill their economies. The WIOA’s Title I allocates funds to states to support local programs for adult learners, dislocated workers, and youth. The federal government runs more than 40 workforce development programs spread across 14 federal agencies with annual spending on workforce development across the 50 states in the amount of $17 billion dollars. Each state and their Workforce Development Boards receive allocations annually for workforce development education initiatives. These funds are distributed to universities, non-profits, associations, and workforce organizations that are dedicated to educating the workforce.
On a programmatic or individual level, WIOA funds are mechanism to provide access to collegiate certificates that enhance economic opportunity and mobility. The students who often need it the most - have the least amount of access - and we can help change that!
